•Oluwo says new league will give local imams sense of belonging
More than 1,000 Imams and Alfas from across Yorubaland on Edo, and Delta converged in Ibadan, Oyo state, on Saturday, for the launch of a new government-registered League of Imams and Alfas aimed at reforming Islamic leadership in the region.
The event, which drew clerics from Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Lagos, Edo and Delta states, received the endorsement of the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi.
In a statement in Osogbo, the monarch said the new body, registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission under number 9003000, marks a departure from the past and a shift toward structured and decentralised leadership.
According to Oba Akanbi, the registration makes the league legally binding and gives it full recognition by government. He noted that it is established to correct the shortcomings associated with previous unregistered associations.
He said the league will promote inclusiveness by recognising Imams and Alfas at the local government level, thereby creating a stronger sense of belonging within Muslim communities.
The Oluwo also urged Muslim clerics to become more involved in politics, arguing that active participation would enable them to influence governance and improve the welfare of the people.
The monarch further challenged the clerics to move beyond the pulpit and engage in partisan politics.
League officials, however, said the body is formed to dispel rumours of division among Yoruba Muslims and to reaffirm an unflinching commitment to the propagation of Islamic values across Yorubaland, Edo and Delta.
