Gbenga Adeboye's prophecy fulfilled 24-years after, as Olumide Awolowo launches network programme on FRCN

A remarkable prophecy by late Nigerian broadcast icon, Gbenga Adeboye, appears to have come to fruition 24 years after it was made, as renowned broadcaster Olumide Awolowo launches a groundbreaking network radio programme on the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).

The newly introduced programme, which debuted on Tuesday, is being simultaneously broadcast across six states in South-West Nigeria, connecting no fewer than eight radio stations between 9:00 and 10:00 p.m.

This development is being described as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s broadcasting industry, marking the first time such a wide-reaching network entertainment programme has been achieved on this scale.

The development has also rekindled memories of a prophetic statement made by the late Adeboye, fondly known as “Funwontan,” in 2002 at a popular hotel in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta.

Speaking in the presence of several colleagues, Adeboye reportedly predicted that Olumide Awolowo would rise to great prominence in broadcasting and eventually operate a network programme that would surpass his own in reach and popularity.

During his lifetime, Adeboye himself commanded significant influence in the industry, with his programmes networked on both AM and FM channels of the Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation (OGBC).

Despite his success, he maintained that Awolowo’s future achievements would attract even greater recognition and admiration.

Adeboye further emphasized the certainty of his prophecy, stating that a significant event would soon occur to symbolically link both men.

In what many now describe as a striking coincidence, Adeboye passed away on April 30, 2003, while eight years later, on the same date in 2011, the birth of Awolowo’s first child was announced — cementing April 30 as a significant date in the lives of both personalities.

Beyond prophecy, Adeboye also played a direct role in shaping Awolowo’s career.

He was instrumental in giving him his first opportunity to speak on an FM radio platform — an opportunity widely regarded as the foundation of Awolowo’s journey to prominence.

As the new FRCN network programme gains traction, industry observers say the moment not only reflects the evolution of Nigerian broadcasting but also stands as a testament to the enduring legacy and foresight of one of its greatest pioneers.
