The new Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, Sikiru Akande, has pledged that tough times await criminals in the state.
He made the pledge on Wednesday in Calabar during the parade of 10 suspected kidnappers, armed robbers and cultists arrested by personnel of the state police command.
The suspects were said to have been arrested across the state with weapons and ammunition.
Two of the suspects, Omini Eteng and Ikpi Patrick, were allegedly arrested with pistols and six rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Also paraded was Prince Okon Etim, who is reputed to be the second-in-command to a wanted suspected kidnap kingpin, Romance. The suspect allegedly confessed to belonging to the Black Axe Confraternity.
Two suspects, Okokon Effiong and Clement Effiong, who were arrested while allegedly robbing residents of Lemna in Calabar, were also paraded. They were arrested by men of the Operation Puff Adder with one locally-made pistol and two live cartridges.
Also arrested by the personnel of the Operation Akpakwu were two suspected cultists, who were picked up at the 8 Miles area of Calabar. They are Henshaw Inyang and Lawrence Essien.
The CP stated, “The Operation Puff Adder on January 17, 2021, upon an emergency call, apprehended one Ajah Chinonso, who forcefully had carnal knowledge of a lady and made away with her mobile telephone. The suspect handed over the victim’s phone to one Udie Augustine to sell off, but he was arrested in the process of selling the phone.
“Items recovered from them include one bag containing one locally-made double-barrelled pistol with one live cartridge, one mobile telephone, ATM card, a pair of scissors and condom. The suspects will soon be charged.”
Akande said, “It is imperative to let the public know that I am in town strictly to ensure security of lives and property. As such, the command is going to wage a relentless and serious onslaught on criminals across the state.
“We have created a robust intelligence network/platform with members of the public and private individuals and confidence building processes that will ensure economic and social development of the state.
“Worthy of note is the command’s preparedness to improve on existing collaboration with sister security agencies, community/youth leaders, spiritual leaders, Police Community Relations Committee, Eminent Persons’ Forum and other critical stakeholders in crime fighting.
“May I also use this opportunity to state clearly that I am not a stranger to Cross River State. To that end, the security situation in the three senatorial districts of the state has already been noted.”
