There is a palpable tension in Ogun State as we speak among the members of Ogun State NURTW and the state government over failed promises to re-constitute NURTW and other unions as earlier promised by the state government as it contained in the press release sent out two weeks ago.
Just two weeks ago, the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun dissolved the National Union of Road Transport Worker( NURTW) and other transport unions in the state to review the operations of the union and to make recommendations on how the unions could be better organized to support government.
Since then, members of the National Union of Road Transport Worker ( NURTW ) have been conducting themselves in a good manner without any brouhaha while members of the 13 man committee have resumed duty.
The story changed on Tuesday morning when members of the transport unions gathered together at their office in Asero Abeokuta to show their grievances but timely intervention of mobile policemen avert what could have been a story today.
Though before the arrival of policemen in some parts of Ogun State, members of the union had started fighting.
We gathered that the state governor who promised the union to review their operations had planned to put them on suspension while some of the party faithful will be put to replace them.
This is what some of the members of Ogun NURTW felt could not be possible.
Below is the mandate of the Road Transport Interim committee:
"The mandate of the Road Transport Associations’ Interim committee is basically to review the operations of the unions and make recommendations on how the unions could be better organised to support the developmental agenda of the state.
“The interim Committee is expected to educate and create awareness amongst the stakeholders in the sector on the need to ensure peaceful conduct at all times and avoid any activities that could undermine peace, security and safety of life and property in the state.
“The other terms of reference for the transport committee are to institute disciplinary procedures/actions against any conduct or behaviour that could undermine public peace and harness the revenue potential of the road transport for enhanced internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and identification and addressing of any issue(s) that may improve the overall performance of the transport sector in the State,”
Some of the members who spoke to us on conditions on anonymity said "what the state government told them through the 13 man committee chaired by Barrister Olufemi Adeniyi is to allow the committee to work for a short period to review their operations and make recommendations where necessary."
"What we discovered now is that there is a plan to put us aside while some of their party members who are not members of our union will take charge of our motor packs. We think the government should be able to leave their expectation particularly when they promise, they should stick to it."
It took the intervention of of mobile policemen who rose to the scene before peace was restored. Even though, members of the public are still nursing fear because of the way and manners the union operates anytime they want to take charge of their motor packs.
