16 awaiting trial inmates at Ilaro prisons have been released with the charge to inculcate good behaviour in order to ensure they do not return to the prison.
The Ogun State Chief Judge, Justice Olatokunbo Olopade, who released the inmates during a visit to the prison, said it was part of efforts to decongest prison formations in the State and ensure that cases in dockets of magistrates and judges were reduced.
"The inmates were released with a view to decongest the prisons. The exercise is in accordance with the service of the law under the custody act. I want to appeal to the released inmates to be of good behaviour, so that they do not return to the prison,’’ the Chief Judge said.
Olopade also tasked the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), Legal Aid Council, Investigating Police Officers (IPOs) and other stakeholders in the administration of criminal justice, on collective responsibilities and necessary synergy that would enhance justice delivery in the State.
The jail delivery exercise by the Chief Judge and the Committee on Administration of Criminal Justice continues tomorrow, with a visit to the New Abeokuta prisons at Oba and Ibara on Tuesday April 10th and Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode prisons on Wednesday, April 11th.
